CDC Donates Laboratory equipment to UVRI HIV Reference Lab

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has donated laboratory equipment worth shillings 2.6 billion to the Uganda Virus Research Institute. The equipment was handed over to the Director of Uganda Virus Research Institute Prof Pontiano Kaleebu at a meeting in the UVRI Directors office.

Dr Pontiano Kaleebu said the equipment would significantly support UVRI’s national HIV reference laboratory testing and surveillance.

He added that the donation would also help in developing capacity for staff to handle HIV related services. He expressed appreciation for the donation as well as the continued partnership between the Uganda Virus Research Institute and Centers for Disease Control.

The CDC Country Director Dr Steven Wiersma while speaking at the handover ceremony said the he was happy the equipment was donated to a trusted partner in the fight against HIV.

Dr Wiersma was optimistic that the donation would further efforts towards ending HIV.
