CDC Africa Director visits UVRI, calls for more research collaborations.

The Director of Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr John Nkengasong has urged health research institutions in Africa to enhance collaborations and support capacity development in strategic areas to tackle public health challenges.

Meeting the Uganda Virus Research Institute Director Professor Pontiano Kaleebu, Dr Nkengasong says Africa has the capacity to deal with public health challenges but better structures and resources need to be strategically distributed and well coordinated.

He says CDC Africa is intent on supporting capacity development in strategic areas such as knowledge management and capacity development among others in different regions of Africa to facilitate immediate response to health challenges.

He visited several UVRI Laboratories and the Bioinformatics section to acquaint himself with ongoing research in HIV, Ebola and; other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Professor Kaleebu pledged UVRI’s support towards capacity development for health research in Africa.
